Segway Discovery announced donation of 100 kick-scooters to Coronavirus relief efforts. The kick-scooters were delivered to six hospitals across Hubei Province to help solve the transportation problems due to the Coronavirus shutdown.
To date, all scooters for aided hospitals – including Wuhan Union Hospital, Zhongnan Hospital of Wuhan University, Tianmen First People’s Hospital, Tianmen Maternal and Child Health Care Hospital, Xiantao Third Hospital, and Tianmen Traditional Chinese Medicine Hospital – have been successfully launched and health workers are using these scooters to commute to and from the hospitals.
In an effort to contain an outbreak of the Coronavirus disease (COVID-19), all public transportation including buses, railways, flights, and ferry services in Wuhan and other cities in Hubei Province have suspended their services as of January. Since then, commuting to and from the hospital for frontline health workers has become a serious problem. With health workers’ hours extending significantly, and since many of them don’t have cars, they had to walk for hours to get to work in the middle of winter.
The team made direct contact with six hospitals in early February by various efforts thanks to the cooperation with the China Green Manufacturing Alliance and China Service Manufacturing Alliance. Immediately after noticing the health workers’ transportation problem, the Segway Discovery team formed a special task force to work on a targeted mobility solution for hospitals and decided to donate 100 electric kick-scooters.
All electric scooters were wrapped in “Wuhan Strong” signage in Chinese characters. Segway Discovery engineers quickly developed a friendly WeChat mini-program, with which registered personnel can scan a QR code and unlock the scooters with their personal WeChat account. Together with the factory and supply chain, the joint effort took almost two weeks to complete. All scooters were delivered immediately and received by hospitals the next day.
This is the second donation from Segway-Ninebot, the parent company of Segway Discovery, after they sent millions of medical supplies to Wuhan.
